What Kind of Oil Does the 2024 Hyundai Elantra Take?

When shopping for a Hyundai Elantra, there's no doubt you'll wonder what type of oil it takes. With this car being both a standard internal combustion engine model and a hybrid, engine maintenance and oil changes are something you'll have to do regularly.

However, will there be a specific type of Hyundai Elantra oil your four-door sedan needs, or can you get away with whatever is on the shelf? Luckily, we're here to help ease your mind and guide you in the right direction!

Hyundai Elantra Recommended Oil Type

The best oil type for a 2024 Hyundai Elantra is 5W-20 to 5W-30 formulas. That's because these allow enough lubrication and protection for your sedan's engine, regardless of the temperature outside. Generally, you can use synthetic or conventional oil in Hyundai-made vehicles, and it's the same for Elantra models.

That said, while conventional oil won't damage your 2024 Hyundai Elantra, we suggest using synthetic oil each time you need a refresh, as it maintains quality for longer. This is mainly because of the molecular quality and the superior formula synthetic oils have versus conventional.

Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil

Regarding oil types, the main difference between synthetic and conventional oil is their molecular structure. With synthetic oil, the oil molecules are more uniform in shape with fewer impurities. Conventional oil, on the other hand, is less uniform and degrades faster than synthetic.

It's also worth mentioning that synthetic oil formulas hold out better against extreme heat and cold, while conventional (or mineral) oil won't. You can almost always expect a longer lifespan with synthetic oil in your 2024 Hyundai Elantra.

Lastly, you want to schedule annual/routine oil changes according to what your dealership recommends to keep your Hyundai running smoothly.

Something to note: Conventional oil often costs less than synthetic. Although this smaller price is tempting, you'll spend more money long-term changing your Elantra's oil.

How to Change 2024 Hyundai Elantra Oil

When changing your 2024 Hyundai Elantra's oil, this should be pretty simple.

  1. First, you'll need about 4.5 quarts of 5W-20 or 5W-30 oil. Tools needed include a 17-millimeter socket, 8-millimeter hex, 27-millimeter socket, pliers, an oil pan, and some ramps.
  2. From there, you can locate the oil fill cap, remove it, and set it in a safe spot to the side. You also want to replace your oil filter, which you can find underneath the Elantra on the passenger side.
  3. Place the oil pan under the engine, use the smaller socket to remove the primary oil drain cap, and then use the 27 mm socket to remove the oil filter housing.
  4. Remove the cartridge-style filter and pop in a new one. You will need to replace the o-ring inside the filter housing as well.
  5. Back to the top of your engine, you can pour 4.5 quarts of new oil (synthetic or conventional) into your Elantra using a funnel.
  6. Once done, re-install the oil cap, twist it on tight, and you're good to go!

It's also worth it to go into your Elantra, navigate to the 'service interval' option in your car's settings, and reset it.
