Safe Exit Assist: How Does It Work?

Safety is a major concern for most motorists. For this reason, Hyundai has gone to extensive lengths to ensure its vehicles are among the safest on the road. Case in point? Many Hyundai models (such as the Kona, Tucson, Santa Fe, etc.) have earned top scores and received many accolades in the safety category for automotive performance. Moreover, Hyundai's commitment to safety is further accentuated with Safe Exit Assist.

But you may ask yourself…

What is Safe Exit Assist?

Imagine pulling up to a playground with your kids. You park your car, and your child, excited to jump on the jungle gym, attempts to rip the car door open. Unbeknownst to your little one, a vehicle slides up to their doorside from behind. And just before the door opens into oncoming traffic, an alert sounds and notifies you of the impending vehicle while locking the door to prevent a collision.

Safe Exit Assist is a safety system that warns you of blindspot traffic coming in from behind. Some of its benefits include:

  • Provides a premium warning system to prevent possible accidents
  • Ensures maximum passenger safety
  • Detects motorists, cyclists, passersby with state-of-the-art technology

The system activates once the vehicle has come to a stop. You can consider this safety system as a form of rear door blindspot monitoring.

How Safe Exit Assist Works

With premium integrated rear radar detectors, the Safe Exit Assist system scans the roadway for oncoming vehicles advancing from the rear. If the sensor detects any vehicles or cyclists, a warning notification emerges via an audible notification in addition to a pop-up alert on your vehicle's gauge cluster. And as a result, the doors are immediately and automatically locked to prevent a possible collision.

Hyundai SmartSense

Hyundai SmartSense is a grouping of Hyundai SmartSense technology. This tech cluster boasts  numerous advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) that enhance safety by improving vehicle control all in an effort to help prevent potential accidents. Some of driving assistance features include:

  • Lane Keeping Assist: This system uses a forward-facing camera to detect road markings. If unintentional drifting or lane departure occurs, visual and audible warnings are displayed to help take corrective action.
  • Forward Collision Avoidance Assist: Forward facing radar is used to scan for obstructions on your vehicle's pathway. If potential collisions are detected, audio and visual warnings to notify you. If corrective action is not taken, the brakes are automatically applied for driver safety.
  • Smart Cruise Control: With forward facing radar, this system monitors front vehicles. If the vehicle ahead slows down, the set speed of your vehicle is adjusted accordingly. This system can also be used at slow speeds as well.
