2022 Hyundai Elantra N parked

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N from the N Division at Hyundai is the high-performance offering of Hyundai's compact Elantra sedan, suitable for those seeking more thrills from their everyday transport.

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N will make you think you're driving a fully-fledged track car.

Sharing the same basic platform as the regular trims lineup, the team at the N performance branch of Hyundai has radically transformed the Elantra with the sporty N-version complete with upgraded engineering components, stylish exterior modifications and a sporty interior, plus, of course, that fire breathing engine in the Elantra N.

Read on to find out why the 2022 Elantra N compact sedan should be your next car.

What's New for 2022?

The Hyundai Elantra N is an all-new car for the 2022 market and beyond. This means little is carried over from the previous regular Elantra generation models, as the N sub-branded Elantra is pretty much all-new.

The closest N division car that came out before the Elantra N is the i30N model way back in 2017. Sadly, this hot hatch never made its way to the United States.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The standard 2022 Elantra models already sport a driver-focused cockpit layout with everything close at hand. This means that when Hyundai's N division took hold of the Elantra to make the N variant, the cockpit translated perfectly into the more performance-oriented version of this platform.

The N version of the Elantra has a sporty interior appearance. It has upgraded reclinable bucket seats with aggressive bolsters to keep the driver in place while cornering. These lightweight bucket seats are also lowered by 10mm to help the driver feel more connected to the car while driving.

The seats also have accents such as Alcantara and leather, with contrast stitching to complete the look. The Elantra N also has metal accent pedals to elevate its look, and the steering wheel has N badge buttons that let you choose driving modes whilst on the move.

The Elantra N is part of the Elantra family, so the back seat space is spacious. It is actually the most spacious of its competitors. The cargo room of the trunk also boasts a lot of load space, making the N variant of the Elantra an excellent daily driver.

2022 Hyundai Elantra Exterior

The Elantra N plays into its sportiness by using exterior elements that are accented with different colors. The exterior appearance has the elegant angles of the standard Elantra, with aggressive elements added to help break up the sleek body.

The black panel and grill on the front bumper of the Elantra N help add an aggressive feel, which is also enhanced by the bright red lip. These small elements help make the N division Elantra stand out in traffic by making it seem wider and lower.

Another exterior element that makes the Elantra stand out is the unique performance blue color in which all N division Hyundais are available. The Elantra N is also standard with a three-element rear wing to help break up the car's silhouette and adds slight downforce for increased stability at high speeds.

Performance and Powertrain

The 286 horsepower turbocharged inline-four comes from one of Hyundai's hot hatches, the Hyundai Veloster N, but with a bit more grunt using the N Grin button, which releases extra power on overboost. The power goes to the front wheels through either the six-speed manual gearbox or the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The six-speed is the standard transmission for the Elantra N, with the eight-speed automatic being an option. The exhaust note of the Elantra N is where this car shines the brightest. The beautiful crackle and pops with a smooth exhaust note make this sedan a roar to drive.

A key feature of handling the Elantra N is that it comes with a rear chassis brace. This is not standard on other competitors' cars and is a common modification that many car enthusiasts add to their cars. This shows how Hyundai's N division knows what its customers want.

Another key feature in the performance, handling, and grip of the Elantra N is the eLSD system. The eLSD, or electronic limited-slip differential, helps the car put down power through corners, which can improve the handling and grip levels of the car when you drive it spiritedly.

2022 Hyundai Elantra N 0-60

While still a compact car, the 0 to 60 mph benchmark of 5.1 seconds is a very respectable time for this size vehicle. This also translates into a quarter-mile time of 13.7 seconds at 103.9 mph. The 60 to 0 braking length is a good 108 feet due to the upgraded brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires as standard. The brakes also come with an air guide, otherwise known as a brake cooling duct. With the cool air paired with the shrunken dust cover, the brakes are kept at the right operating temperature while driving the car.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Hyundai Elantra N has many driver features that make the Elantra N a good daily driver. Below, we will list some of the key driver-assistance features of the Hyundai Elantra N.

Hyundai SmartSense

The Hyundai SmartSense system that is found on the Elantra N is Hyundai's software that ties in multiple driving assists into one platform. This includes applications such as Smart Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist and even the Driver Attention Warning.

Besides the Hyundai SmartSense System, you also get the following:

  • High Beam Assist
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist With Pedestrian Detection
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Following Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Safe Exit Warning
  • Rear Occupant Alert

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Hyundai Elantra N comes with two 10.25-inch display screens that allow easy viewing of vehicle information and key performance data while driving the car. One of these screens acts as the digital gauge display, which shows all the information you need, while the other can also act as the infotainment system while you are not on a track.

The Elantra N comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, meaning you can easily connect your phone to the car so you can listen to your music or use the map features on your phone. The infotainment system also features an in-dash navigation system.

Fuel Economy and MPG

The fuel economy of the Elantra N variant will not be as good as that of the fuel-efficient standard versions, but that does not mean the Elantra N has a bad mpg rating. The Elantra N's best combined EPA rating is 25 mpg when kitted with the six-speed manual transmission.

The six-speed manual's EPA rating of 25 mpg combined includes 22 mpg for city driving and 31 mpg for highway driving. The automatic transmission variant of the Elantra N drops the combined MPG rating to 23 mpg and 20 mpg for city driving and 30 mpg for highway driving.

2022 Hyundai Elantra N Pricing and Specs

The Hyundai Elantra N is available as a single-spec model. You can either get your Elantra N in the manual version or the twin-clutch automatic. The Hyundai Elantra N starts off at $34,850 for the manual trim and starts at $36,350 for the automatic variant.

For those buyers who want more than the N line has to offer, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra is available in a useful lineup of standard trims that make for the perfect personal transport whether it's the work commute or a shopping trip.

The following trim levels are available for 2022:

SE

Even though the SE trim level is the entry-level Hyundai Elantra, it still comes with many great features for customers. It has a 147 horsepower inline-four engine with an outstanding combined EPA estimated 36 MPG fuel economy rating.

The base MSRP of the SE trim starts off at $21,625.

SEL

The Hyundai Elantra SEL trim level is the most popular version of the Elantra, and it's for a good reason. It comes with a useful list of must-have features for any new car, such as a hands-free smart trunk release and a 10.25-inch touchscreen display.

The SEL and SE share the same engine platform, and at a starting MSRP of $23,575, the SEL model is a great buy.

Limited

The Hyundai Elantra Limited comes with all the high-end features to satisfy most buyers' needs despite sharing the same drivetrain as the lower trim levels. The Limited trim comes with an enhanced Bose Premium Audio system.

You get all these luxurious features with the Limited trim level of the Elantra for a starting MSRP of $27,065.
