The Hybrid version of the Elantra sedan was first revealed in late 2020 with the introduction of the newest seventh-generation Hyundai Elantra. The new Hyundai Elantra Hybrid went on sale in North America as the 2022 model.

EPA estimated fuel economy values are 53 city/56 highway /54 combined miles per gallon for the Hyundai Hybrid Blue trim while the Elantra Hybrid limited trim is rated at 49 city/52 highway/50 combined mpg. The Elantra Hybrid is fitted with an 11-gallon fuel tank.

Regenerative Braking

An integral and important part of the Hyundai Elantras Hybrid powertrain system is the regenerative braking function. To keep the onboard 240-volt, 1.32-kWh lithium-ion battery charged the Hybrid system effectively turns the electric motor that is also used to slow down the car in braking maneuvers into an onboard generator.

The energy that is produced by the electric motor under braking is then stored in the Lithium- ion battery located under the rear seat and is used to power the paired electric motor under acceleration, uphill driving, and low-speed driving situations.
